I met Paula Carnell at Apimondia 2025 in Copenhagen and recently had the privilege of speaking with her. She is a renowned beekeeper, honey sommelier, and author with a truly unique story. Paula will be one of the inspiring voices featured in my upcoming book, "Women and Queens."

Paula’s journey is a testament to the healing power of nature. From being a successful artist to facing a debilitating illness that left her bedbound, it was the bees—watched from her window—that helped guide her back to health. Today, she is a pioneer of "spiritual beekeeping," advocating for chemical-free, naturopathic practices that honour the bee above the harvest.

As I navigate my own path from agriculturalist to beekeeper, I am constantly guided by women like Paula. They have taught me that beekeeping is not just one thing. It is a spectrum as diverse as the colony itself.

For the women I’ve met, working with bees is a life that wears many hats:

👑 The Queen Rearers: Mastering the delicate science of genetics.

🌿 The Healers: Using apitherapy to treat ailments.

🧒 The Educators: Bringing bee therapy to children in kindergartens.

🧘‍♀️ The Spiritualists: Connecting deeply with the hive’s energy.

📜 The Policymakers: Fighting for the laws that protect our pollinators.

🧑‍🌾 The Trainers: Teaching beekeeping in challenging environments.

Just like the bees in a hive, where every member knows their role and works tirelessly for the collective good, women are building a global empire of care, resilience, and innovation.

I am more convinced than ever that we need to reconnect with nature. There is a saying often shared online: "If the bees die, we die." But I choose to flip the narrative: If the bees live, we live well.

Bees hold the answers to a sustainable future. It is our job to listen.
